Cosmetic Batch Coding and Expiry-Date Placement: A Brand Checklist

Published August 22, 2026
OEM/ODM Insights

Short answer

A cosmetic batch code should identify the relevant production record and remain readable on the finished pack through its intended life. Before artwork approval, decide the code format, placement, print method, contrast, available space and the record that explains the code. Date or period information should follow the destination market and product requirements; do not place a date on artwork until the responsible reviewer confirms the correct approach.

Separate the code from the consumer message

A batch code is an internal traceability reference. A consumer-facing date, period-after-opening symbol or storage statement serves a different purpose. Keep the two fields separate in the artwork file and in the product data record. If the product is sold in several markets, list the exact requirement and language for each one rather than copying a generic date format.

Choose a location that survives use

Review the bottle, closure, label, carton and shipping case as a system. A code hidden under a label flap may be hard to retrieve; a code on a glossy shoulder may rub away. Test the selected print area after handling, filling, packing and normal transport. Record the substrate, ink or marking method, character size and contrast target.

Field Decision to record
Format Characters, separators and revision owner.
Location Component, orientation and allowable area.
Legibility Contrast, size and inspection method.

Market note Country-specific date or symbol review.

Run a simple approval sequence

  1. Confirm the code structure with the quality and production teams.
  2. Place a representative code on the intended component.
  3. Check readability at normal viewing distance and after handling.
  4. Verify that the artwork leaves enough clear space.
  5. Link the approved example to the specification and purchase order.
  6. Recheck when the component, marking method or market changes.

Code checklist

  • Is the code unique for the required record period?
  • Can the responsible team retrieve the matching batch file?
  • Does the mark remain readable after packing and transport?
  • Are date and period statements reviewed separately?
  • Is the artwork revision aligned with the production instruction?

Plan coding with SHANGPINLAB

Describe the product in the product categories, show the intended component in the packaging range, and add coding questions to Start a Project. Final code format, placement and market wording should be confirmed for the actual configuration.

FAQ

Can the batch code be printed on the carton only?

That depends on the traceability and market plan. Ask how the finished unit will be identified if the carton is separated.

Can a brand invent its own date format?

Use a format accepted for the destination and product, then document it in the artwork and product records.

What if the code is hard to read on a dark bottle?

Test a different contrast, location or marking method before approval. Record the chosen solution rather than relying on a visual assumption.
